There are different types of smoke detectors you can install within your property.
Older smoke detectors rely on ionisation, which relies on the device's internal chamber to fill with smoke to detect a fire. They use a small amount of radiation to create a circuit that smoke particles will break upon entering the chamber to signal the alarm.
Meanwhile, photoelectric
alarms
use a light beam to detect a fire. When the smoke particles interfere with the light's path across the detector, a light sensor registers this change to sound the alarm.
Due to the photoelectric smoke detector's method of using a visual signal to detect a fire, they're considered the safer option for properties. They detect fires in the early stages, making them more effective for homes and businesses.
You should install smoke detectors on the ceiling, ideally at least 30cm away from the walls and any light fittings.
The centre of the ceiling is best for smoke alarms, as smoke rises during a fire so that the detector can identify the hazard as soon as possible.
Under NSW regulations, you must have a smoke detector on every level of your home. Ideally, it's best to have smoke detectors in every hallway near a bedroom or where you have most of your electrical appliances.
These requirements are enforced by law in NSW, ensuring that every property where people sleep has adequate protection from fires.
