4 Reasons Why It’s Important to Maintain Your Smoke Alarms

Australian law stipulates that all residential rental properties, homes, apartments, relocatable homes, caravans, movable dwellings, or any other building where people sleep must have working smoke alarms installed. It’s also the difference between life and death.

At On Guard Security and Communications, we discuss the reasons here why making sure maintenance of smoke detector alarms is crucial to you and your loved one’s safety.

1. A fire can happen at any given moment

Whether you’re asleep, on holiday, or at work, your smoke detector is working around the clock to ensure that if there’s smoke, heat, or fire – you (or your neighbours if you’re not in) are made aware of it.

Smoke detectors let off a very loud alert signal to ensure the alarm is heard. Without a properly fitted smoke alarm, your home or business won’t have the protection needed to act fast in a fire.

2. It’s not just for you, it’s for your family too

If fitted correctly, a smoke detector alarm system could stop the loss of loved ones (and yourself) and also avoid further property damage. It’s vital that you check whether the installation is done correctly and be proactive around the house for the sake of you and your loved one’s safety. When fitting a smoke detector, you’ll need to consider the following:

  • Location of the smoke alarm.
  • The number of alarms you want to install (for example, one outside each bedroom and bathroom and then in the kitchen and living room)
  • Whether the smoke alarms are easy to access if you need to change the batteries and/or for maintenance.

3. Protect your assets

We all have home and business assets that are valuable and can often have an emotional attachment too. The operations of a business or the love that goes into transforming your house into a home can require a lot of investment.

Preventative measures such as the correct fitting of a smoke detector can help protect these assets from getting damaged, lost and also avoids having to face the aftermath of replacing everything.

4. It’s the law

It is mandatory that smoke alarms must be fitted in all buildings in NSW where people sleep. They must also meet the requirements of Australian Standard AS 3786. It is compulsory that homeowners must install smoke alarms on every level of their home.

This includes rental properties, owner-occupied homes, relocatable homes, camper-vans and caravans or any other residential property where people can sleep.

The alarms need to be positioned in hallways near bedrooms; however, where there are bedrooms in separate parts of the house, there needs to be one fitted between the area of the home where the bedroom is and the rest of the home.

Having your smoke alarm installed into your home or office electrical system is an efficient and cost-effective way to ensure safety first. At On Guard Security and Communications, we’re here to help. Simply call a member of our friendly team on 0409 656 398 for more information.
